D&R Canal Trekkers Reach Princeton, NJ

Posted Posted in 2021

Today, we biked 26 miles, with some small issues, which were all resolved. We had breakfast at a café, where we ate bagels some nice and breakfast sandwiches. We then went to the D&R trail, where the majority of the biking happened. We took a nice lunch break at a farm house/shop, where we bought supplies to make sandwiches. We had grapes, crackers, ice cream, cheese, and chicken salad, and we were very sanitary. Due to the gravel there was a flattened tire but it was fixed. We then went back onto the trail, and biked all the way to the hotel. When we got there we found out that the Holiday Inn Express was closed due to COVID-19 and we were moved to a the Crowne Plaza Hotel for free. Finally, we got to the hotel relaxed, read, and jumped into the pool. We went to get Mexican food and donuts for dinner. We wrapped up by watching Men in Black, and we look forward to another day of biking!

Cape Cod Trekkers Have a Needed Bike-free Day

Posted Posted in 2021

We woke up in the morning and and learned that Otto and Paulotta had caught a mysterious stomach bug, and they had stayed up the whole night not feeling great. Jaya, Sasha, Lachlan, Roman and Jack all slept well. Jasper had gotten very little sleep because he stayed up with them for emotional support, and Josh stayed up all night keeping Jenna company as she nursed Otto and Paulotta. After everyone had woken up, everyone ate some muffins and cereal. After a group decision to delay our visit to Provincetown, we booked another night in Nickerson State Park. Otto, Paulotta, Jasper, and Jaya all stayed back go rest while everyone else went to Provincetown for the day. Jenna kept everyone hydrated and put on podcasts to occupy them. After a short bike ride to the bus station, our day in Provincetown began. We started by trying to climb the granite tower, Pilgrim Monument but we got there too late. So, instead we walked to the shops and cruised around the stores. Later, we walked on the beach, and we all got a nice seafood dinner. Lachlan, Josh, and Roman got shrimp scampi, and Sasha and Sam shared a Lobster roll and a cod rueben. Jack got a shrimp roll and devoured it in a split second. After a hour bus ride back to our campsite, the non-sick people set up their tents and went to bed, while the sick group slept in the pavilion.  Lachlan

Maine Coast Trekkers Relax in Acadia National Park

Posted Posted in 2021

7/26 We woke up this morning  all safe and snug in the tents we set up in the dark last night. We enjoyed a scrumptious pastry breakfast and walked to catch a bus into town. When we got to Bar Harbor, we decided to go on a gander. Post-gander, we met in the park for a delightful lunch. The lunch consisted of a plentiful spread of charcuterie. After our bountiful meal, we caught a bus to Sand Bar Beach. At the beach, we had some rock races and saw some exquisite views before getting on the next bus back to camp. Once this tomfoolery came to a close, we partook in a group feast which included tacos. After that we went on a evening stroll down to a beach near the campsite. We traversed the majestic rocky terrain and watched the waves crash through the sand like the subtle passage of time; we sang around the campfire and reflected upon our goals for the end of the trek. Tomorrow we’re headed out of Acadia and back to our favorite campsite for our last night of camping!  –The Maine Coast Crew

Maine Coast Trekkers Reach Acadia NP

Posted Posted in 2021

We woke up at 6:30 and said goodbye to our favorite campsite. We had bagels and peanut butter and Nutella for breakfast. Seth led us to our first stop, Shaws, where we ate a yummy lunch and tried to dry off from the rain. Once we started biking again, everyone was cold and wet, so we stopped for hot chocolate. We kept biking motivated by hopes to get to Acadia! Luckily we got to explore Bar Harbor before arriving at the campsite. We got toasty in a pizza shop and didn’t have to make our own dinner. Even though we couldn’t fully enjoy bar harbor because of the rain and wind, some of us still got to buy some cool souvenirs. Finishing the ride to Acadia was pretty cool, as we left Bar Harbor, riding up the mountain was spooky, almost like the opening to a horror movie. It was very windy, there was a ton of fog, the clouds were low.  Around 8pm we finally pulled up to the campgrounds where we have 2 large wooded sites. After setting up tents, we went to bed. Off to explore Acadia more tomorrow!  The Main Coast Crew

1000 Mile Trekkers Enjoy the Scenic Hills of New York State

Posted Posted in 2021

Today we biked through the scenic hills of upstate New York, stopping for a snack in the morning at a local market (the name of which I do not remember.) They found a sweet cat there that let us pet it. After that we stopped at a farm stand for lunch: some fried veggies as well as locally grown fruit and maple candies. Most people thought they were too sweet but I loved them. Continuing the day we hit some steep rolling hills that were just the right amount of challenge, and stopped for a swim in the river and then ice cream which helped raise morale for our last 15 miles of the day. We ate ramen with veggies for dinner, and are now settling in for a good night’s sleep at this beautiful campground that even has a car washing station that we have turned into a place to clean our bikes. Looking forward to another lower mileage day tomorrow (hopefully with less hills!) –Written by Trekker Noah

D&R Trekkers Off to a Great Start

Posted Posted in 2021

Today was a great start for our D&R trip. After talking with the parents and going over everyone’s bikes we descended into the depths of Penn Station where we got food and boarded our train to New Brunswick, NJ. When we got off the train, we found the nearest park and taught the kids everything they needed to know for the trip. During this tutorial on bike touring we toured some of the Rutgers campus while giving physical demonstrations on how things worked. Wrapping up, we officially begun our trek and biked to get some lunch. This first bike ride went much smoother than expected since it appeared that all the kids were paying attention to our little lecture and retained the vast majority of the information. After lunch, we reached the hotel and took the kids for a swim and to play tennis. Finally, we finished off the day with a pizza and our first edition of our daily Rose, Bud, Thorn.

Cape Cod Trekkers Ferry to Hyannis and Ride the Cape Cod Rail-to-Trail

Posted Posted in 2021

We left the campground today after eating cereal, yogurt, and blueberries with honey. We cruised through the neighborhood with gingerbread houses, stopping to check out the rocking chairs and décor. We caught our morning ferry, had some snacks, and took a nap to the rocking of the boat. When we arrived in Hyannis, it was drizzling pretty heavily and we ate Philly cheesesteaks. We rode on the Cape Cod Rail Trail, an extensive path that we went on for fifteen miles. Paulotta had a flat, but Jenna patched it up. We stopped by an art fair where we got matching bracelets, played in the playground, and got a tip that the Cape Cod minor league were playing nearby. We watched the game while Jenna, Otto, and Jack graciously brought us food. We then went back to the campsite and slept.

Martha’s Vineyard Offers Plenty to the Cape Cod Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2021

7 am started with breakfast – eggs and sausage made by our amazing leader Sam. We headed out to the touristy Edgartown where we got milkshakes, then we went to the beach which was very crowded but still fun and we got less sunburnt today. After family pictures we headed back into town and got overpriced tacos that took forever and frankly needed some seasoning and topped it off with ice cream. On the way home we rode into a beautiful sun set and stopped at a drive in and the movie was Jurassic Park. We then rode home in the dark which was different and a vibe. Some of the kids stayed at the campgrounds and ate pie and played Chinese poker. Once we got back to the campground we did closing circle together and hopped into bed ready for an early wake up. Sasha
