NY-Montreal Trekkers Visit Walkway Over the Hudson & FDR House

Posted Posted in 2018

Today began surprisingly early, considering we had access to a variety of the luxury items of the modern world, including a shower and prepared breakfast. Nonetheless, our pace was slower as we ventured further along our route. Bits of glass along the road brought upon us the misfortune of two flat tires which added several hours to our journey. Eventually, we overcame these difficulties and rode towards the town of Poughkeepsie, where we visited the Walkway over the Hudson, apparently the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. After an hour of picturesque viewing up and down the Hudson, we moved on through Hyde Park where we stopped at FDRs former estate. We visited the library which contained a plethora of authentic items, bearing value through their connection to Roosevelt’s influential presidency. We ended the day at a campsite, with fireworks being discharged around us in celebration of the Fourth of July. -written by Trekker Eric

NY-Montreal Trekkers Enjoying Burlington, VT!

Posted Posted in 2018

We woke up to patriotic music playing from Kyle’s phone. After we woke up, we had a nice breakfast of bars and we were off to Burlington, Vermont. Thankfully, the temperature was a lot cooler than the days before. We stopped at a couple of gas stations to refill on water and get some on the go snacks.

We arrived at the campsite and dropped our stuff and rode into Burlington. In Burlington, we rode to Ben & Jerry’s and ordered a Vermonster. A Vermonster has 20 scoops of ice cream, 4 bananas, 4 ladles of hot fudge, 3 chocolate chip cookies, 1 chocolate fudge brownie, 10 scoops of walnut, 2 scoops of toppings, and a lot of whipped cream, if you believe the bucket it came in. After a long struggle, we victoriously conquered the Vermonster. After finishing the Vermonster we swam in Lake Champlain for an hour. Kyle helped Nielsen and Wyatt prepare Buffalo Mac and Cheese and we enjoyed the fireworks. Happy Birthday America!

European Grand Tour Trekkers Follow the Seine River to Rouen

Posted Posted in 2018

I started the day by waking up to a damp sleeping bag and a snoring Henry lying on my leg. I gave him a light slap and started packing for the long day of biking we had ahead of us. David cooked the oatmeal as we tried to roll up our tents without getting wet. I said goodbye to our French neighbors as best as I could and we set off on our journey through the French country side.

We passed many tractors and even more cows, quickly reaching the highway. Although the speed limit was fast, the drivers were much more considerate than they were in England. We debated for a while about where to eat, but finally decided on sandwiches, AGAIN. We kept biking along the highway until we finally reached Rouen, its famous cathedral looming over the other buildings.

Aimee swiftly checked us in and we all flopped onto our beds. Showers were taken and David and Zoe dozed off in the afternoon sun. This left Henry, Aimee, and I in our hotel rooms, eating leftover pasta from a chip bag and watching Night at the Museum dubbed in French. A pretty good way to spend the night.

Pacific Coast Trekkers Climb Hurricane Ridge! (5242 ft)

Posted Posted in 2018

Happy 4th of July! Today we woke up to the sound of screaming crows and other birds. We woke up late and cooked up delicious pancakes with some cooking supplies borrowed from our friendly Texan neighbor. We then undertook one of the hardest, most memorable and most breathtaking biking experiences yet- we climbed to the top of Hurricane Ridge.

Everyone went at their own pace and got it done! Some of us took 1.5 hours while others took closer to 3. We hung out at the top of the mountain, taking in the views. We took our daily group photo on the top of the mountain, with an incredible snow-capped mountain backdrop. We then biked back down to our campsite, a fun adrenaline rush with plenty of wildlife and a few cool tunnels. When we returned to our campsite we made hot dogs, beans and smores. We had a marshmallow toasting and s’mores competitions too! We’re excited for a new campground (with showers!) tomorrow! -From Lola (aka The Texan Searching for the Sunshine)

NY-Montreal Trekkers Enter Vermont After a Boat Ride on the Lake George Mohegan

Posted Posted in 2018

This morning the Trekkers started off the day with a boat ride up the elongated Lake George starting at 10:00 AM, and ending at 1:00 PM. For breakfast the trekkers had  chewy bars and orange juice at the dock. On the boat ride the Trekkers had hot dogs for lunch and played cards to pass the time.

When we arrived at the dock we prepared for our 30 mile ride. From the docks we were 3 miles away from Ticonderoga. Today was mostly up and down; not flat terrain which all of us would have preferred. After travelling 30 miles, the Trekkers arrived at the campsite for the night in Button Bay State Park. For the dinner  the Trekkers had chili. Tomorrow the Trekkers head into Burlington where they will tackle Ben and Jerry’s Vermonster, and hopefully  see some fireworks.

First Day Cycling in Beautiful France for the European Grand Tour Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2018

For our first day in France, we started out the day by waking up on the ferry. Once we got our bikes we started riding through the streets of Le Havre, stopping on the side of the road to make some breakfast (grilled cheese, oranges, and straight up Nutella). We continued on and biked over the Normandy Bridge to the town Honfleur. The ride was flat and smooth. Spending a few hours there, we wandered through art galleries and by the Ferris wheel and Seine River. Finally, we left for the campsite where we pitched our tents and had a nice dinner of pasta and garlic bread. Overall a fun and relaxing day.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Return to the US and Enter Olympic National Park

Posted Posted in 2018

Today we woke up in quaint Victoria and enjoyed a cinnamon toast crunch breakfast with plenty of milk. We crossed back into the United States by ferry.

With the beautiful Olympic Mountains in the background, we re-entered our homeland through Port Angeles. Once off the ferry, we paused for a PB and J picnic. A friendly bike shop owner lent us his superb bike pump and sage advice on the treacherous route to come. Indeed, the 7 mile uphill climb to Heart o the Hills campground in Olympic National Park was not only steep, but we faced a major road closure which forced us onto a fallen log ridden side road. Only our perseverance and incredible teamwork got us to the camp. Relaxed and accomplished, we feasted on a meal cooked over an open fire. Tomorrow we explore the park and go hunting for some beautiful vistas!

A Pool and Hotel Cap a Hot Day of Biking Up the Hudson Valley for the NY-Montreal Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2018

The second day of our trip was quite an adventure! While the heat wave continued we got out of camp bright and early. Cause we were making such great time, we decided to have a great time! We stopped at Las America’s for some fruit smoothies. Seis jugos naturales por favor. While we were passing through Peekskill we had lunch at Pugsly Park. Ironically, we saw no pugs!!! After a small hike on our bikes, we rolled into the Fishkill Ramada Inn. After some much deserved swimming, we enjoyed some cards and pizza to close out the night! Hasta Mañana!
