An End to An Amazing Journey for NY-Burlington Trekkers

Posted Leave a commentPosted in 2021

This morning we woke up bright and early at 6am to give ourselves plenty of time to complete our 50 mile trek. We sped out of the campsite blasting YMCA and dancing along as we rode. After about an hour of riding we stopped in North Hero for coffee and pastries. We continued on for another hour, biking along the scenic shoreline of the Lake Champlain Islands until we reached the Canadian border. Feeling very accomplished, we picnicked as close to Canada as we could to refuel for the next 25 miles. Shortly after our lunch we took an unpaved “path” through some farmland and had a blast weedwacking our way through. We all had a good laugh once we emerged back onto the road and cleaned out our derailleurs. A few miles later we saw a creemee small shop and stand where we had the BEST creemees of the whole trip. Climbing up a couple more hills we finally made it to St. Albans, our final destination of our trip, and cleaned ourselves up for a nice dinner out. We went to Mimmo’s and ate until our hearts were content, filling our bellies with delicious garlic bread and pasta. We departed from dinner completely stuffed and biked back to the hotel in our lowest gears barely hitting 5 miles per hour. The short trek back to the hotel was one filled with an abundance of laughter. Finally back at the hotel we took a dip in the pool, did our final highs, lows, and grows of the trip and headed to our beds for a much deserved good rest. Cheers to all the NY to Burlington trekkers on an amazing journey!! We hope you all keep biking and plan to keep in touch (for that Burlington to Montreal trek in the future). Thank you for being awesome — we couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids!

Peace out // hasta la vista – Lis and Gabby

Cape Cod Trekkers Bike Along the Rail Trail

Today we woke up in Martha’s Vineyard and had oats, milk, yogurt, berries, and peanut butter for breakfast. Since we knew it was going to be a long day we put away tents and packed up quickly. We took a scenic route to the ferry and boarded just in time. It was about an hour ride with lots of snacks. When we reached the port, Dash and Calvin wrestled while Quincy, Britt, and Daniel ate snacks. We took about a two hour bike ride on the Cape Cod Rail Trail with a few stops on the way. We ended the day with swimming in the pond at the campsite and pasta with red sauce for dinner.

Through the Causeway to South Hero Island for NY-Burlington Trekkers

The morning was bittersweet, in the classical metaphorical sense, but in a literal way as well due to the wonderful breakfast of refreshing coffee, sweet pancakes and French toast, and sausages made by Gabby’s mom and dad that we suburban campers woke up to. After our delicious meal we bid farewell to two of our wonderful bikers: a cacophony of inside jokes following them as they spilled down the winding road away from Gabby’s parent’s house. After the morning, the remaining 3 campers thinned their loads and went off to the causeway. The causeway awed us with its beauty: confined in the stream of runners, walkers, fishers, and other bikers and surrounded by miles and miles of Lake Champlain we took time to stop by a bridge to take leaps of faith off into the shimmering clean water below. Once at the end of the causeway, we got on the bike ferry which took our bikes as well as us over to the island of South Hero where we picked up a wonderful meal and an encouraging and engaging conversation. As the grey clouds drew in we decided to leave our restaurant to bike to our campsite. Once we arrived a busy day of biking completed and a 50 miler on our horizon we had a early bedtime to gain energy for the long trek tomorrow.

Beach, Shopping and Music at Martha’s Vineyard for Cape Cod Trekkers

Today we woke up at 7:30 to a splendid breakfast including granola, fruit, and yogurt. After we finished breakfast, we were all looking forward to talking to our parents as we had funny stories to share. Once all of our calls were concluded we were headed to the beach. It was a very short ride through a fancy street with lots of shopping locations. The beach was very nice with warm sand and cold water. Quincy pointed out a floating climbing structure close to the beach. We had lots of fun on the beach and then we headed to the shops. We first went to the gift shop, Dash bought a balloon and Daniel and Brit bought lollipops. After that we all got ice cream! Martha got blueberry, Emily got cookie dough, Calvin got chocolate chip, and Mitchell got M&M. For dinner we walked through the scenic streets to get to a pizza place which was very good. Sadly, it was time to go back to the campsite. Once we got there, we were pleasantly surprised to see a Live band that we listened to for numerous hours. To wrap up the night, we made s’more‘s over a fire and had our nightly meeting.

Exploring Waterbury Off the Bikes for NY-Burlington Trekkers

Our day began at our a trip to the farmers market with Gabby’s sister who had baked us delicious cookies. After browsing through the food, art, and farm stands we continued biking towards Gabby’s house in Essex, VT. We moved our bikes and gear inside and hopped into cars for the first time the whole trip. In Waterbury we stopped at many iconic Vermont locations like the cider barn, lake Champlain Chocolates and of course Ben and Jerry’s! We were grateful to not be on our bikes on the way back as it was pouring and we were having a blast singing along to some of our favorite songs. Navarros parents joined us for dinner and we feasted on burgers, hotdogs, corn on the cob, rice and beans, and ropa vieja! We finished off our relaxing day with a campfire and card games!

Cape Cod Trekkers Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard

Today we started in Sandwich, MA. We left the pavilion towards a bike trail through Falmouth and ended at the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. It was a short and enjoyable ride. Daniel, Quincy, and Brett played Uno. Calvin and Josh were talking and laughing while I relaxed and went to the top deck. We got off the ferry and we rode a short way to Martha’s Vineyard family campground. We were happily surprised to see two cabins for the night that would save us from soaked tents. We ate delicious tacos made mainly from Dash. Thanks to all Martha and Emily‘s planning for the day, everything today went smoothly! We finish the day by talking about the next day ahead in Martha’s Vineyard. Tomorrow we are excited to explore the island and go see beaches and lighthouses!

A Great Day Off in Burlington for NY-Burlington Trekkers

Today we had a lazy and relaxing morning, waking up at 8 and setting off for the day at around 9:45. We stopped for some quick refreshments at a local coffee truck, before making our first stop at Earl’s Bike Shop, where a wonderful lady helped us get our bikes back in shape with some complementary adjustments, and also recommended some supplies for the road. After our bikes were repaired, we tested them out as Gabby gave us a personal tour of her alma mater, University of Vermont.

We made our first extended stop at Church St., where we stopped to eat ham and turkey wraps, ingredients courtesy of the local City Market. We finished up lunch at around 1:15, and we made a group decision to spend the rest of the time exploring the beautiful downtown of Burlington.
At around 5, we all met back up at our bikes to have a scrumptious dinner at The Irish Pub where we tried the Canadian special, Poutine, among other delicious foods. After finishing up dinner, we had Creemee’s while watching the sun set over Lake Champlain.

At this point, you probably thought our day was over, but it was not! After setting up our tents at the campground, we walked down to Texaco Beach, where we swam under the stars, pointing out constellations and shooting stars. We ended our day with our Highs, Lows, and Grows while walking back to the campsite, and finished our day with a good night’s rest.

NY-Burlington Trekkers Bike 50 Miles and Meet Gabby’s Family

Today we woke up at 6AM sharp to go eat breakfast in Vergennes. After packing up and taking a few bites of muffin, we rode down the same road we that we had yesterday to get to 3 Squares Cafe. Gabby’s dad was kind enough to take the weight off our bikes by putting our bags in his truck, and driving them back to his house, for this would be our longest day yet. We then biked to a small local grocery store to grab lunch supplies, and ate sandwiches in a gazebo. Afterwards, we rode to a swimming hole that Gabby knew of. We jumped off rocks and fought the current in the cold, refreshing water before having to leave. After taking a group photo, we got back on our weightless bikes and rode down to the round church. Immediately after seeing it, Navarro dropped his bike in the grass, walked over to the church and promptly hugged the building, for it was the first landmark of the trip that he recognized. We then rode to Gabby’s parents house to pick up our stuff and say hi to her cat before finishing our day with some maple creemees, reaching our goal of 50 miles in the process. After settling into our sleeping areas in Gabby’s apartment, we watched Bo Burnham’s inside before going to bed after a long day!

Rainy Adventure over Cape Cod Canal

Today on our adventure we started out with another fresh meal of oatmeal and cereal with tangerines. We met a nice bike shop owner that fixed our gears, and we proceeded onto Sagamore bridge over the Cape Cod Canal when the rain started to hit. We finally got to the town of Sandwich in the rain and got our campsite set up. It was a challenge but we pulled through, we also stopped at a Christmas store to get supplies and take a break from the rain!
