Welcome to San Francisco! This morning was the beginning of the California Coast Trek.  A 525+ mile ride along one of the most beautiful roads in the USA – Route 1. For the next 17 days the Pacific Ocean will be on our right offering scenes of expansive beaches, spectacular cliffs and canyons, as well as magnificent bridges. Our group will spend today cycling and sight-seeing San Francisco and staying overnight at the Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel.  Tomorrow  we start our ride south and over the next days will overnight at 2 lighthouse hostels, beach at Santa Cruz and Monterrey, bike and hike Big Sur, visit towns of San Luis Obispo and Malibu, and end the journey with 2 days in Santa Monica and Los Angeles.  Along the ride we’ll have wonderful stories to tell and pictures of the group in many scenic spots which will be shared right here on the Teen Treks blog.  Stay tuned!

Sweet Relief for the Allegheny Passage Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Sweet sweet relief for the Great Allegheny Pass trekkers. After 2 days of bouncing on dirt and splashing through mud, we had 15 miles of pavement on the Western Maryland Rail Trail! A great way to finish our day. Tonight also ends our camping streak as we had a great night in a Trailside motel, a bed and shower will do us all some good. Tomorrow we have another 10 miles of pavement for a nice smooth ride.

New England Trekkers Leave Sandwich Behind

Posted Posted in 2019

Today we left at 9:30am to continue our trek through Cape Cod.  We biked our first half of the day to a Stop and Shop to enjoy what we finally deserved: 3 bags of CAPE COD chips.  We left after a restful stop under a shaded hill, and biked the second half of our trip through a bike trail – something which we always appreciate.  We stopped a few miles before camp to devour 2 tubs of ice cream and fix two of our bikes at Brewster Bikes.  After arriving at our camp site in Brewster, we set up camp and inhaled 11 pizzas and finished with s’mores once again with a beautiful fire.

MADE IT! – NY-Montreal Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

WE MADE IT!! The Montreal skyline finally peaked over the horizon today and from there we took the scenic route along the St. Lawrence River as we peddled the final stretch into the city. As we got closer and closer to the city itself, we found ourselves surrounded by increasingly many cyclists. One of them told us that Montreal has a few powerful groups of bicycle activists and that the city has become arguably the most bicycle friendly city in Canada over the course of the last decade (move over Vancouver). On our way into the city we also rode on the Montreal Formula 1 racetrack for a bit alongside many other bikers that were either taking a nice late afternoon ride or making a statement and asserting themselves as the true dominant form of transportation (Ay take your 870 horsepower engine and toss it in the river, WE’RE BIKIN HERE). From there we rode by one of Montreal’s oddest landmark pieces of architecture, Habitat 67. An apartment complex with a uniquely brutalist/modern/lego-land-ish feel. These buildings are some strange ones and served well as a stark contrast to the architecture that is currently surrounding our hostel in the Old Port.

Allegheny Passage Trekkers on the C&O Canal Towpath

Posted Posted in 2019

We awoke to an early freight train passing by our campground next to the YMCA. Anna and Nielsen got up early to take showers in the YMCA locker rooms while the rest of the group got prepared for the rest of the day. Once the entire group had reunited, eaten breakfast, and fully packed, we began our day’s trip.
We all biked down to the very start of the C&O Canal Towpath. Noah was our point for the day, so he led us along our first few miles of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath. About a quarter mile into the path, it started getting pretty muddy, but we powered through it.

About 10 miles from our nights campsite, we stopped by a little town called Oldtown, MD, where we rode down the Old Town Road, until we found a small playground right outside of the Oldtown School. We ate a quick lunch, then we jumped back on the trail to finish up the last 10 miles of the day.

Canada at Last! – NY-Montreal Trekkers Almost There

Posted Posted in 2019

Bonjour from Quebec. We are now officially an international group of trekkers! Today’s ride was an easy one and passing over the border was a breeze. We wanted the first stop of our Canadian excursion to be somewhere that we could only visit in Canada, so we biked straight to the closest Tim Hortons for a completely immersive experience. Fun fact: asking a French Canadian Tim Hortons employee for vegetable cream cheese will likely produce more confused looks and French banter between coworkers than cream cheese. Also, not knowing any French whatsoever has turned guessing the purpose of many of these buildings into quite the activity. Is it a dentists office? Are there lawyers in there? Who knows! Our final stop of the day was our campsite for the evening where we’ve been able to go for a nice swim and relax before our final push into Montreal tomorrow morning. The trip seemed like quite the uphill battle at points, pun intended, but now that we’re so close it feels like we just started riding a few days ago. Time flies. Well, ciao ciao for now.

New England Shore Trekkers Make it to Cape Cod

Posted Posted in 2019

We started off the day by waking up at 7:30am and quickly (for us) getting out of camp by 9am.  We rode 5 miles to Dave’s Diner (guess who picked).  After we stuffed ourselves with bacon, waffles, pancakes, and eggs, we rode 16 miles to a public library where cold water and lots of books were provided.  We read and ate snacks for 2 hours before continuing our trip.  Our points successfully spotted a beach area where we swam and ate ice-cream.  After filling ourselves once again, we finished off our biking for the day on a beautiful bike trail right next to a canal.  We set up camp and had leftover chili with toppings.  Some might call it a “burrito without the burrito bun.”  We made a campfire and ate s’mores before going to sleep, which was a perfect end to our long and fun day.

Great Allegheny Passage Trekkers enjoy miles of downhill after crossing the Eastern Continental Divide

Posted Posted in 2019

We started the day off with some cereal in milk.  Then we were off. The trail was only 20 miles then a big down hill.  But on the the way up we went on some awesome bridges.  It was not long till we were at the contadental divide.  We took a small break and some pictures.  Then we had the down hill. Cruising down it really fast we got to the Big Savage Tunnel.  It was so cool, there was dim lights in it and fog.  When we got through it there was a beautiful view of the mountains and farms.  We went down 15 miles in less than an hour and got some delicious Chinese food.

Scenic Waterfront Vistas on the NY-Montreal Trek

Posted Posted in 2019

Today’s theme was scenic waterfront vistas. The bike trail running out of Burlington took us straight up the shore of, and eventually straight out into, Lake Champlain. When I say straight out into the lake I guess I more so mean straight out over the lake. The Island Line Trail eventually sort of veers out over the water and turns into this isthmus/land bridge-thing that connects the eastern shore of the lake with an island in the middle called Grand Isle. We had the lake, and all of the views that come with it, to both our left and our right all the way up to the loading dock for the bicycle ferry. We hopped on for our first boat ride of the trip and made landfall again after a surprisingly quick journey that really only takes you past a gap in the trail that is meant to allow boats to pass through. From there we rode up into Grand Isle and straight to Allenholm Farms for some maple creamees, apple cider slushees, and quality time with Willy the friendly donkey.

An Easy Biking Day in Central Massachusetts for the New England Shore Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Today we entered the second half of our trip!  We started off by waking up -for the last time- in THE Hilton, and enjoying a mosh posh of cereal and fruit.  We left around 9:30 am and headed off for our 25+ mile day.  We knocked out 17 miles before stopping at Under The Sun Farms where we ate delicious cheese and sandwiches and picked blueberries.  After arriving at the camp site, we set up camp and feasted on chili and salad.  Some swimming and showering then led us to devouring a toasted apple pie.
