Rest Day for New England Shore Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Today was our rest day in Providence, RI!  As a result of our patience of waiting for our rooms yesterday, we started off by enjoying a complimentary buffet breakfast.  After, we rode a whopping 2 blocks to the nearest park to wash and de-grease our bikes.  We then rode all the way back to THE Hilton and watched the second half of the Women’s World Cup Final, just in time for the two goals. Next, we ate a quick lunch and planned out the rest of the day.  We biked to the RISD museum then the bike/coffee shop.  We then split up to go shopping for our spaghetti and meatball dinner.  After eating dinner on THE Hilton’s porch, we went swimming in the finally fixed pool.  (P.S. – HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESSICA!!! Hope you had as amazing as a day as we did!)

NY-Montreal Trekkers Really Enjoy Burlington, VT

Posted Posted in 2019

Burlington, Vermont is quite the special place. Sitting on the Eastern shore of Lake Champlain, it lies tucked away between NY’s Adirondack mountains to the west and Vermont’s Green mountains just to the east. All of these features coming together create some waterfront views that (almost) make it seem like your looking out onto the Puget sound (sans the killer whales). When you turn around and head into town, you’re then quickly greeted by an outdoor pedestrian street that could just as easily be in Ithaca or Boulder. The street punks are similarly crusty and the outdoor stores are just as plentiful. The difference here in Burlington though, is that the ice cream is from Ben and Jerry’s. We walked into the ice cream shop with a few ideas and walked out with something called a Vermontster, which basically consisted of 20 scoops of ice cream, every topping available, and about 10 spoons. We finished that off in an almost concerning amount of time before we ventured back down to the waterfront to take the Champlain Bikeway over to the campgrounds that we’re staying in for the evening. Before dinner we went for a dip in the lake and now that we’ve had our sloppy joes it seems that it’s about time for bed. Signing off, Go Catamounts.

Great Allegheny Trekkers Continue South

Posted Posted in 2019

Another day, another adventure for the Great Allegheny Passage trekkers. We awoke at 7:30 in Ohiopyle State Park and navigated our bikes down a steep walkway back to the path. We got in 11 miles before lunch in Confluence, PA.
In the early afternoon the sun started shining again and we were off towards Husky Haven campground where Noah and Shaun cooked some delicious Buffalo Mac and Cheese (an old Teen Treks favorite) and Kyle fried some dough for desert. We drifted off to sleep to the sounds of a nearby babbling brook.

NY-Montreal Trekkers Cross the Border!

Posted Posted in 2018

Another fantastic day for the New York Montreal trip! Today, after over 300 miles of riding, the Trekkers finally crossed the border into Canada!

Rough headwinds did slow us down, but didn’t stop us from completing 25 miles before lunch on the other side of the border. We got to try a Canadian delicacy too, (no, it wasn’t poutine) ketchup flavored potato chips. It tasted like a cross between barbecue and salt & vinegar chips. We also enjoyed fresh apples and donuts. At our lakefront campground the trekkers and Russell played a game of pick up basketball while Nielsen and Kyle prepared nachos for dinner and fried dough for dessert. Tomorrow we reach our final destination of Montreal!

NY-Montreal Trekkers Swim and Bike Along Lake Champlain

Posted Posted in 2019

We started our day early today expecting to bike only 34 miles. We ate an early  lunch in the park in a small town. When we reached D.A.R Park we relaxed and went swimming in Lake Champlain. The water was very refreshing especially after a hot day. We decided that we wanted to bike further since we still had energy and time so we quickly stopped at a local supermarket, made dinner,  and had a beautiful sunset bike ride to Whispering Pines Campground. We got in well before dark, played frisbee, played with the neighbors dogs, set up camp and had ice cream for dessert.

Ghost Adventures: Teen Treks Edition – New England Shore Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Today was the spookiest day of the trip yet. We awoke to a foggy morning in Newport and began a misty cliff walk. We walked down stairs to the cliffs (originally providing beach access for wealthy families) that had been rebuilt after the 1938 hurricane. As we stood on the cliffs we observed a spirit in the mist who sent a splash of water our way upon our sighting. Strong spiritual energy continued to follow us as we made our way to the Newport vineyard farmers market for delightful pastries and fresh veggies. After fueling up, we biked across Mt Hope bridge to Roger Williams University campus where we stopped for a satisfying lunch in A/C. We forged on through the heat to ride on a beautiful bike path bordering the water, and enjoyed some black raspberries and Dell’s frozen lemonade along the way. Our vibrations continued to channel strong energy, and we arrived at the Hilton… a Hilton. We started the day visiting significant places from the Gilded Age, and as we end in a cushy hotel in Providence, we are exploring themes of inequality and wonder what the ghosts of the Gilded Age may wish to teach us about the present moment?

Great Allegheny Trekkers Tour FLW’s Fallingwater

Posted Posted in 2019

Today might have been the best day yet for the Great Allegheny Passage trekkers! We slept in until 9 am (a welcome break from our early mornings) and the only planned activity was a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece Fallingwater a couple miles from our campsite.  Just as we were about to set off for the house over the steep hills of Pennsylvania, we got a call from Kirk’s mom who, through some magic, had found us a taxi to and from the house, sparing us a steep climb. We all unanimously agreed that the house was super cool and would like to live there as James Bond villains. We also took some time to explore the town of Ohiopyle before a 30 minutes walk back to our campsite along the bike path. Tomorrow we leave our home for the last two nights and continue making our way towards DC.

Allegheny Passage Trekkers Went White Water Rafting on Independence Day

Posted Posted in 2019

Today we had an amazing day White Water rafting! All 6 of us were able to fit in 1 boat and set off on our adventure. We did 7 1/2 miles down the river facing all sorts of rapids and rock fields. We had one section called the Million Dollar Wave that was a stretch of wavy river that rocked us up and down. There were even long stretches of the river with no hazards where our professional guides said we were allowed to jump out and swim. We all got splashed repeatedly and went swimming to cool off in the hot day. The guides even gave us a lift back to the campsite with our bikes which was great because we were exhausted from all the fun we had. Trip leader Anna then rode back into town to get us some well earned pizza from the local restaurant.

Patriotic Independence Day Ride for the NY-Montreal Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Another long one behind us. We biked about 50 more miles today and, oh boy, did it feel good to hop in the shower at the campsite tonight. One thing that did set the figurative winds at our backs though, was the patriotic energy that was emanating from small town after small town. Every closed post office that we rode by was like a shot of red, white, and blue straight into the bloodstream. Another nice little refresher that we enjoyed quite a bit was a stop off at a stream for some splashing and rock skipping to cut through the heat of the day. We also crossed state lines for the first time today! Vermont and it’s beautiful people have been treating us quite well so far. We were giving our soon to be massive quads a break at the top of another massive hill when we heard an organic dairy farmer’s voice calling out and offering to refill our water bottles and let us hang out with his dogs. We definitely accepted that offer. We don’t have nearly as many miles to ride tomorrow but we’re looking to get another early start in the morning. God Bless America.
