A Lot of High Points for the New York-Montreal Trekkers Including Mahjong

Posted Posted in 2019

Today was probably the most vertically challenging yet. We’ve seen both sides of many hills now. The downhills are sweet but the wind in your hair can only last so long before you’re back in that lowest gear. Additionally, the great ball of fire was almost as unforgiving as the rolling curves of Mother Earth (it was quite warm today as well.) However, we managed to stay hydrated and were able to go for a dip in Lake Lauderdale to cap off the ride. The most significant detail of the day though, is that Wednesday night is game night at the Lake Lauderdale Campsite in Cambridge, NY. Close to 50 miles up and down hills just becomes a distant memory when you have those mahjong tiles in hand.

Parades, Lighthouses, & Fireworks on Block Island for the New England Shore Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Today we enjoyed our day off on Block Island for the Fourth of July. We had a leisurely morning recovering from a long ride the day before, and then headed into town for the parade. This year’s theme was Favorite Television Shows, and we caught enough candy from the passing floats to last us the day. Much of the afternoon was spent at the beach, swimming, playing cards, and reading. We capped off the day with dinner and a ride to the lighthouse at the tip of the island, where we could see a half dozen fireworks displays on the mainland. It was a well-deserved day off in a beautiful place, and now we are ready to get on the road again.

Architecture, History, & Thai Meal on the New York-Montreal Trek

Posted Posted in 2019

This morning we all woke up fresh and clean in the Holiday Inn Express. We fueled up at the continental breakfast and were off to see the New York’s state capital building. The intricate stone carvings on the Million Dollar Staircase were exceptional. Shortly after we went to the new York State Museum and learned all about the state of New York and it’s vibrant history. We all had salad and pizzas for lunch near the local bike shop where we bought some supplies and tuned up some bikes. While we waited we played and walked in Washington Park, walked the town, and visited shops. No cooking or cleaning for dinner tonight. Instead we feasted on a delicious family style Thai meal with dumplings and spring roll appetizers and different curry and rice as main dishes. We tucked into beds early to prepare for a long ride tomorrow.

New England Shore Trekkers at Mystic Seaport

Posted Posted in 2019

Today we biked around 20 miles or so, in order to reach Mystic, CT. Along the way there were numerous hills that were quite steep, but reaching the top of a few hills was rewarded with a downhill path that allowed for us to reach high speeds in excess of 16-18 miles per hour. We had lunch at Mystic Pizza, a pizza place that is well known within Mystic. Lunch consisted of ice-cold water, a vegetarian pizza,  pepperoni, and a gluten-free variant of pepperoni pizza. We visited the Mystic Seaport Museum, where a whaling ship from the 1800s is preserved. Then, we biked to our hotel only one mile away, where we are staying now. Good night.

Last day for Amsterdam-Paris Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2019

Our last full day of the trip was bittersweet (sweet because there were crepes involved!) After breakfast at the hostel, we biked 12 miles to the famous Palace of Versailles. We spent the majority of the day there, touring the beautiful chateau and gardens. After a fun downhill ride back to the hostel, we walked over to Montmartre and had a really nice dinner on a terrace with yummy crepes for dessert. It was a great way to cap off an awesome trip!

A Great Riding Day on the Great Allegheny Passage

Posted Posted in 2019

Today we put the great in Great Allegheny Passage! We woke up and had breakfast at the campground and set off. One trekker needed some repairs but after a quick pit stop we were off and running again. We ate lunch by a pond with dozens of ducks and fed them and played on a see-saw. Our advancement was once again faltered by a pair of fallen trees across the path, but we heroically hoisted our bikes above the fallen boughs and kept riding. We made it to our campsite and cooked a delicious ramen stir fry with Oreos for dessert. We’re getting up nice and early tomorrow for a day of white water rafting!

New England Shore Trekkers make it to Block Island

Posted Posted in 2019

Today, we woke up in our hotel rooms especially early to get a head start on our long trek of 43 miles, the longest we’ve biked. We packed our gear and ate the hotel breakfast. Finally, we hit the road and biked 10 miles to a Cumberland Farms to get food for our lunch and refill our water bottles. Then, we cycled another 15 miles and took a lunch break. After, a group went around 10 miles to supply the group with food for Block Island. The rest of the bikers then went and met them there. Together, we biked the final segment of our trip to the ferry for Block Island. We unloaded our bikes and cargo and waited on the hour long boat ride. When we arrived to the island, we biked 1 mile to our camp site and set up camp. Then, we swam at the beach, ate hotdogs and salad for dinner, and watched early Fourth of July fireworks. After a long, tiring day, we headed back to the camp site and prepared for a good night’s sleep.

Allegheny Passage Trekkers Leave Pittsburgh for Washington, D.C.

Posted Posted in 2019

When we biked into our campground, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief and victory at having completed a challenging but rewarding first day of riding on the Great Allegheny Passage.  We pedaled further and further away from Pittsburgh on what couldn’t have been a sunnier more beautiful day. Lunch was purchased and heartily enjoyed by the Youghiogheny River in McKeesport.  Finally, after biking more miles under the increasingly trying midday heat, we spotted Kyle just off the trail in a beautiful park bearing two large containers of ice cream, like an oasis in the desert. Though we were still a bit tired after our break we were determined to make it to our campground for the night.  We decompressed over quesadillas and turned in early for the night, proud of our full day of riding and looking forward to another long day on the trail. We feel prepared to face whatever adventure the forces throw at us tomorrow!

New York-Montreal Trekkers Do Albany

Posted Posted in 2019

After an early morning swim in the Hudson River we were off! We put twenty quick miles behind us by noon and were greeted by the glistening and somewhat strange Albany skyline in the early afternoon. Today’s lunch was enjoyed in the shade on the lawn of the State University of New York Headquarters. From there, we headed up into the observation deck of the tallest building in the city, the Corning tower. The view was magnificent and really contextualized all of the progress that we’ve made in the last five days. We followed that up by exploring the capital plaza a bit and happened to stumble upon some old family artwork. We were walking down in the concourse under the main plaza when Trekker Andre pointed out a giant piece of artwork and made the bold claim that it was made by his grandfather. A look at the placard and a quick google search verified that we do indeed have a descendent of a famous artist among us (see picture above). From there we headed back to our hotel, hit the pool for a bit, cooked dinner, and are hitting the hay now. Hope all is well back in the real world.

Amsterdam – Paris Trekkers explore Paris

Posted Posted in 2019

The day was spent exploring the great city of Paris! We started the morning with breakfast at the hostel before setting out for our adventure. We made our way towards the Seine River and caught a glimpse of Notre Dame. Unfortunately, we were unable to tour the inside (due to the recent fire) but we did see as much as we could from the outside. Next, we made our way along the river towards the center of Paris. We passed through Tuileries Garden on our way to the Champ de Mars. Here, we saw and climbed the Eiffel Tower! The view from the first and second levels were beautiful. After our decent, we had lunch in the park before making our way to the Arc de Triomphe. Crepe Scott! What is that?! A stand that sells a delicious French dessert! Of course we bought a round of crepes before taking the underground tunnel to the center of the roundabout that is home to the Arc. On our way back to our hostel, we did a little shopping on the Champs-Élysées. After a long day of adventuring and after dinner, the group watched the USA beat England in the semi final match of the Fifa World Cup! The group rests now and is looking forward to the bike ride to Versailles tomorrow!
