A Busy But Wet Day in Martha’s Vineyard for Cape Cod Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2017

We woke up this morning, had breakfast at the hostel, and biked in a drizzling rain eight miles to Vineyard Haven. We locked our bikes while we ate pizza for lunch. When it started to pour, we put boxes on each other’s heads to try to be dry and ran through a flash flood to a movie theater.

Since we were over two hours early we went to the Madison Mouse Hotel and asked for towels and played cards inside the dry hotel. Then we ran to the movie theater to watch Jaws, which was filmed here on Martha’s Vineyard and was packed. (Almost) everyone jumped at the scary shark attacks) After the movie we found out BOTH of our fellow trekker Davis’ tires were flat. While fixing it, a passerby stopped and helped fix the flats.

We biked back to the hostel, the rain parted, and we cooked grilled cheese and stir fry. We were offered donuts from a woman at the hostel and finished the long long wet day with a vicious game of cards with some fellow hostelers, British soccer coaches. –

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Enjoying Their Last Days of Biking

Posted Posted in 2017

One day from civilization and I’m not sure how eager I am to trade a campfire and s’mores for electricity and a hot shower (as nice as it sounds). It’s amazing to be part of a group that, despite not being able to experience a greatly anticipated kayaking session (due to the only 4 hours of anything but sun we’ve had this whole trip), still managed to have a wonderful day enjoying prime biking weather and savory s’mores at the end of the day. However, to give a run down, we biked 43 miles with a great tailwind and beautiful views of the mountains we previously climbed. We carefully crafted “artisan” sandwiches at lunch and finished the day off with grilled cheese, unsuccessfully cooked on our raging campfire, but still tasty! The moon was full so some of us stayed up “star tripping” and singing to ukulele around our final dying fire.

Across America Visits Historic Caves

Posted Posted in 2017

The Across America Trekkers traveled along scenic Route 2 in Montana today, making a long afternoon stop at the Lewis and Clark Caverns where they took a two hour walking tour. The tour allowed them to explore Montana caves discovered over 100 years ago and learn about these ever-changing structures. The caves also offered a nice place to beat the heat! After their tour, the Trekkers biked on and finished their day in Three Forks, MT with a delicious camp-cooked stir fry dinner.

Cape Cod Trekkers on Martha’s Vineyard

Posted Posted in 2017

Today we took the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. While hanging out at the beach even though it was a little cloudy, we buried our fellow Trekkers in the sand and turned them into a fish skeleton. We then biked to the Martha’s Vineyard hostel, where we played soccer with fellow hostel -mates from London and made a delicious stir fry which we ate outside after it stopped raining. Then, we went downtown to watch a male a capella group and eat even more ice cream. We’re all looking forward to a few nights in beds after camping all week. – Davis

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Biking To Fort Townsend

Posted Posted in 2017

Eight weary travelers. Four kayaks. One destination: what is apparently the third most popular state park in America. We woke up bright and early this morning to the wretched to cry of the blue grouse, probably creation’s most deeply suppressed regret, an abomination of an animal, a disgrace to all birds. Scratch “bright.”  Then, it was only early—3am  or something morbid, I don’t have a watch. On the way out of the campgrounds, I recall encountering a swingset. Mike and I touched the tree branches. Emboldened by our glorious achievement, I tested my swinging abilities, and took on the age old challenge: going ALL the way around the swing. It didn’t work out exactly as planned— I took an expedient flight to 10-feet-awayville via swing.

Biking was nice. We got in about 12 of our 35 miles before being distracted by cheap sandwiches. Seven miles to our ultimate destination, we encountered a fully decked out Chevron food mart, where we purchased an immense amount of refrigerated fried chicken and potatoes. Stuffing our new found treasures into our bike racks already brimming with gear was quite the accomplishment. Ready to crash, we entered Fort Townsend. By the way, we never made it to the destination aforementioned in that appropriately dramatic introduction.

We intended to go kayaking, but our plans were squashed by our doubting our ability to make it in time. Regardless, at camp, we had a meal fit for a king on a budget. Nobody had room for marshmallows, but the roaring fire that yours truly kept burning late into the night was too tempting for any trekker to decline.

I’m writing this while Koby’s playing some song on the ukulele, watching the trees above me creek back and forth underneath a purple sky, and I can say for certain that we’re all going to bed fat and happy

NY-Montreal Trekkers Head North Through Hudson, NY

Posted Posted in 2017

Today we enjoyed a leisurely ride up Route 9 from Mills Norrie State Park into Columbia county. After stopping for a delicious lunch of tomato, basil and mozzarella sandwiches, we continued into the hip town of Hudson. Here, we visited two bookstores and an animal shelter. Later, we finished our day with dinner at a pizza shop, before riding a final three miles to our camping spot on the Hudson River.

NY-Montreal Trekkers Bike the Walk Across the Hudson & Visit FDR Mansion

Posted Posted in 2017

Easily the best part of July 5th was the Dutchess County Bike Path. Taking a quieter route on a beautiful and well-maintained bike path felt great but that wasn’t all, it ended with a fantastic view from the top of Walk Across the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. After all of that we were pretty hungry and stopped in a deli for lunch. On the way to the campground we toured the FDR Mansion overlooking the Hudson and posed for a photo sitting next to a statue of the president and his wife. We ended the day with swimming and then a delicious Trekker cooked curry and s’mores over a bonfire.

Across America Trekkers Living it Up in an Upscale Hotel

Posted Posted in 2017

Today the Trekkers journeyed from Deer Lodge to Butte, MT. They had an easy mileage day, as they experienced several bike mechanic issues, but they pushed through the challenges and were rewarded with a night in a nice hotel. They got to rest and relax in the evening, wrapping up the day with a dip in the pool and a soak in the Jacuzzi.

EARTHQUAKE UPDATE:  The Trekkers were sound asleep by midnight last night when they were shaken awake by a 5.8 earthquake.  They all turned over and went back to sleep.

Cape Cod Trekkers Bike the Shining Sea Bikeway

Posted Posted in 2017

“Today’s journey to Sippewissett Campground began with a delicious homemade meal of chocolate chip pancakes and strawberries on the side. After being well fed we began our ride to Falmouth, Massachusetts following the beautiful Shining Sea Bikeway. After a delicious lunch of sandwiches from Dean’s Market we began the final stretch to our campsite, making great time with plenty of time to hang out and play volleyball at the campground. Finishing the day we made Mac n cheese with broccoli on the side for dinner and then sat around our campfire drinking hot cocoa and sharing our rose bud thorns for the day. Tomorrow we head out for Martha’s Vineyard and are eagerly awaiting the adventures in store!”
