64 Mile Day for the 1000 Mile Trekkers

Posted Posted in 2020, 2021

Day 5: Corn field, corn field, soy field, corn field…this has been our sole view for two straight days. We have completed over 120 miles in the past two days through backroads lined with tall stalks of corn with the occasional soy field tucked  in-between. Today, we celebrated our highest planned mile accomplishment, with 64 miles between our morning campsite at Atwood Lake and our evening landing pad at Sauder Village. Our group is getting stronger every day and working together as a team to accomplish our set goals. Though we made it, we definitely had our moments throughout the day where fatigue kicked in. We took lots of breaks for snacks, ice cream, and nice stretching session led by Trekker Noah. Sometimes we park ourselves on a random grassy area on the side of the road and people come out of their house and ask if we need water. We are always eager to top off our water bottles and make a new friend at the same time.  We met two farmers today, Randy who plucked  potatoes from his field and Seth the straw farmer who introduced us to his fresh litter of golden retriever puppies. Today, we excitedly crossed the border from Indiana into Ohio, and to commemorate the occasion the group shared a cartwheel across the state line. There was even a frisbee toss from Indiana into Ohio. We ended at a pretty great campsite on a small lake with delicious ramen and camp-side s’mores. Tomorrow we have 50 miles to Toledo, the group is much anticipating a comfy hotel bed, laundry machines, shelter and nice showers! Here’s to another great day on a bike!

GAP Trekkers Hit the Trail

Today we officially headed onto the Great Allegheny Pass and biked about 30 miles to the Dravo Cemetery Campground led by Ted and Leo. Cooper started us off by waking us up and getting us moving. Noah served as our safety officer while Dominic gave us moral boosts through out the day. We also got in a great swim break! We were completely overwhelmed by the advice and generosity we received from other cyclists on the trails. We met some friendly locals while Noah, Anshuman, Kai, Ted, and Gabby shopped for our next 3 meals. The five of them cooked up the group spaghetti and meatballs and caprese pasta for dinner. This was aided by a fellow cyclist (shoutout to Hub!!) who lent us his jet boil. He also saw us struggling with our campfire and offered us some birch bark which we all appreciated so much. We are looking forward to another amazing day tomorrow!

Cape Cod Trekkers Active Day on Martha’s Vineyard

Today started with a dark and gloomy late morning filled with rain. When the rain let up around 10:00, we started to make breakfast. For breakfast we had toasted bagels on the grill and topped them with cream cheese and peanut butter. After breakfast, we got our things together and left the campsite Sprung 11. We biked 6 miles to another town called Edgartown. At Edgartown, we walked around the streets looking at the many shops they had there. From the shops we got some awesome clothes and food. We then made our way to Shop & Stop to get some snacks and lunch. For lunch we had sandwiches with roast beef, turkey, and cheese. After we were all full, we biked over to the beach where there was a bridge that everyone was jumping off of that was called the Jaws Bridge. We jumped off a couple times, then biked and to the final activity of the day: kayaking. We went kayaking in Lake Tashmoo, which was actually a bay, which had a bunch of really cool boats and houses. Once we got far enough out, we are able to stand and so we dug for clams in which we got five. Finally we biked back to camp and started dinner. For dinner we had some really good burgers with bacon and cheese and a couple of us tried the clams! After cleaning up dinner we went to go watch the live band that was playing at the campsite. In the end it was a really great day.

Ferries and Island Hopping for Pacific Northwest Trekkers

We woke up in the quiet stillness of the cathedral of trees, at a campground south of Port Townsend. Breakfast was a bagel and cream cheese, but with honey as strongly suggested by Will. We headed off into town, riding along a forested path that turned into a marina. A paper mill was spotted along the way, and we could see the hazy outlines of the other islands not too far off in the distance. Before meeting our very rocky ferry, we stopped in the beachy, laid-back Historic District with a friendly bike shop, a native art gallery, and a cozy outdoor cafe. Once across the water, we coasted through some farm fields where a marathon was taking place, and we got cheered on as well. We ended up getting pizza and Abigail pushed for cinnamon rolls, which was definitely a creamy highlight of the day. While strolling along the tourist area, Lis bought two books and Hudson got some nihilism soap. Justin, Noah, and Zori picked out a pasta and broccoli dinner while the rest of us did some much needed laundry. Sam led us to Deception Pass during golden hour, where the light softly played hide and seek with the trees. We all fell asleep to the rush of the ocean and the warm food in our bellies.

Pacific Northwest Trekkers Ride Beautiful Path

The day started out well with a great breakfast of oatmeal, bananas, blueberries, cereal and coffee, cheffed up by Leila and Will! We took the Olympic Discovery Trail for most of the ride and ended up cruising our way to the Fort Townsend campsite to get there pretty early. Upon arriving we dropped our stuff and then took the Pacific Northwest trail into Port Townsend, where we stopped at a Safeway for food. Bought some Safeway Chinese food which was a nice change up from the normal lunch cuisine, but I wouldn’t say it was the best Chinese food any of us had ever had… by any stretch. We also had some ice cream sandwiches and chilled while Trekkers called home, then went back to camp where we had some more calls home and our cooking crew made dinner. Salad with feta and cherry tomatoes and croutons and avocado plus quesadillas with beyond beef and it was amazing (again)!

Miles of Corn Fields and Farming Life for 1000 Mile Trekkers

On day 4 of our 1,000 miles journey, we left bright and early from Potato Creek State Park and headed to Atwood Lake in Wolcottville, Indiana. On our 60-mile journey, we traveled on lots of farm roads and steady uphills together as a team. We saw really tall tractors, interesting cars and mini towns, as well as lots of friendly Mennonite locals with horse-drawn buggies passing by us. On the way, we had the privilege of taking a break with some cool horses and ponies and fed them a few delicious snacks. We also stopped at a Mennonite school playground and had fun on the seesaw and swing set. After ice cream outside the grocery store, we biked the rest of the way to our campground and made hot dogs over the fire. Over all, a great day!

Allegheny Passage Trekkers Biked Pittsburgh

Hello all! We had a great first day of our trip! We covered navigation skills, rules of the road, and basic safety. Today we biked a little over 15 miles both within and on the outskirts of the city. We found ourselves in some random downpours but were able to find cover most of the time. We also took on a massive hill on our way to getting pizza for lunch, but we really enjoyed getting to go down it after! Later in the day some of us headed to the pool for a swim, while others chose to play some games in the lobby. For dinner we set out on foot and found a street blocked off full of food trucks and live music which was a great end to the day. We ventured back to the hotel and had a nice group circle and talked about the day and our highlights. Tomorrow we are looking forward to getting onto the trail and getting to cook our own dinner and camp! Photo attached is us enjoying our dinner (Gabby took the photo and is holding up the falafel) and the trekkers outside the baseball stadium!

Cape Cod Trekkers Enjoy an Easy Day on Martha’s Vineyard

We slept in late this morning to make up for the long day yesterday, and enjoyed the noise of the rain on our cabin roof. But Patrick made sure that we didn’t waste the day by barging accidentally into the wrong cabin and waking everyone in our cabin up! After we all got up, many of us headed to the camp store to check out when they had. Tessa and Elliot took everyone’s laundry and laundered it in the camp’s laundry machines. While our clothes washed, we made calls home to celebrate the halfway mark of our trip. Following our relaxing morning, we all biked a mile into town to a line of shops where we spent an hour and a half buying chains shirts and delicacy desserts.. Some of us even got free bumper stickers because the store clerk felt nice. While some of us finished up shopping, Alex, Will, and Elliot went to buy dinner which was hot dogs on the grill, chips, and pickles! We all tried some of Drew’s hot sauce followed by some chocolate milk. It was really hot. Then we finished the night by going to the big campfire and making s’mores and sharing our ‘hero’s of the day’ at the nightly meeting. Goodnight!

1000 Mile Trekkers Kiss a Beautiful Day Goodnight

Day 3: We woke up in Indiana Dunes State Park after a warm night serenaded by screeching owls. The nine of us left early this morning and found beautiful thick forests lining the backroads and neighborhoods to La Porte where we stopped at Kroger for a grocery trip. Early in the day, the group took a break at a basketball court and shot some hoops with the basketball Silas is carrying on the back of his bike. Leaving La Porte, we travelled through quiet roads surrounded by corn fields. The entire day was cool and breezy and made for great biking weather. On the route, we saw lots of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, horses, cows, alpacas, one ferret crossing the road, and one random zebra. The zebra was a representation of the surprise Indiana has given us, it is lush, green and an unexpectedly interesting state to bike through. We’ve got some quirky games going, like a banana being strapped to the bicycle of the person designated as the days “Heath and Safety Manager,” so they can remember their role in the group that day. But most impressively, we have a science experiment going where we are carrying one blue cheese pizza slice in a ziploc bag that was leftover from a dinner in Chicago in which we plan to take all the way to NYC. This experiment started with a joke about a side-by-side taste testing of the two city’s pizzas. Some of the Trekkers are determined to take a bite of the well-travelled pizza on the final day. We’ll see how that goes. The night was called off by changing time zones and gaining more daylight, then settling in at Potato Creek State Park for a night under the stars and laughing at the ridiculousness of weary, delirious bikers next to a fire while consuming way too much Oreos and peanut butter. Not a bad way to kiss a beautiful day goodnight.
