Cape Cod/NES Trekkers Bike to Martha’s Vineyard

Posted Leave a commentPosted in 2023

After we woke up and had breakfast, we packed up and left Nickerson State Park. We then rode West on rural streets, the Cape Cod Rail Trail, and US Route 6. We then arrived at Hyannis port and rested our bikes against a wooden fence. We had an hour until the ferry left.

We then walked to a food market, got our lunch and dinner, and ate salami sandwiches in a grass field. This was a great opportunity to call our families and get some ice cream in a futile – yet delicious – attempt to cope with the high temperature.

The ferry took us to Martha’s Vineyard while we had conversations, bought Gatorade, and re-enacted a scene of the Titanic.

We then rode on rural streets and paved paths, the latter took us along two edges of an airport and several steep hills on our way to the hostel.

Beds were chosen, showers were taken, and dinner – Pasta cooked (with kebab sauce) by Dylan – was had by all and enjoyed by some. As I write this, we are having conversation in our hostel room.

Historical and Scenic Stops Along NYM Trek

Posted Leave a commentPosted in 2023

Today we woke up to a warm and dry hotel. It was a chill morning, as we had to get our clothes to a laundromat, so we had a late start. It was a great first half of the trip because it was on a flat rail trail. We flew through the first 20 miles and we stopped at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Historical House in Hyde Park, NY. It was a great and interesting stop which gave us some energy for the last 10 miles. Another rest stop we took was a giant bridge in Poughkeepsie which overlooked the Hudson. It was a beautiful view. We arrived at our camp tired and ready for nachos. We set up camp and now we are going to bed. -Leo

Cape Cod/NES Trekkers Day Off, Bike to Chatham

We woke up this morning in Brewster, MA, in Nickerson State Park. We had a delicious breakfast of muffins, and for brunch ate the 4th of July s’mores we didn’t get to eat last night because of the rain. We then rolled out and biked an hour to the Chatham Fish Market, where we saw a bunch of seals!!! It was awesome. We had lunch at the market and then went to the beach and swam. After, we walked to the bookstore and got ice cream. We had a dinner of hotdogs over a fire and s’mores. We’re very excited to catch the ferry to Martha’s vineyards tomorrow!

Across America Bikes into the “Spud-like” Hills of Idaho

Posted Leave a commentPosted in 2023

Today we crossed the border into the potato-like hills of Idaho. Sluggish starts and a mysterious thorny plant set the early tone for our ride, giving us a baker’s dozen of flat tires to fix, holding us back for hours… but the team came together to help one another and clock a respectable 62 miles, ending at Lenore Rest Area. Highlights of the day include our first clouds in days, a long downhill descent, chess from Noah’s homemade set, three-cheese mac ‘n cheese for dinner, and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with knowing we stuck to our guns and went the distance. Tomorrow we’ll speed further into the spud, enjoying the ride from starch to finish.

Amsterdam to Paris Bike to Cadzand, Last Night of Camping

Posted Leave a commentPosted in 2023

Today we found ourselves woken up at a Stayokay Hostel which was stationed inside of a medieval castle. Finist commanded everybody out of bed as boss, and we reluctantly complied. After brushing our teeth and whatnot, we began biking, recognizing the light at the end of the tunnel during our last night of camping. We biked some 12 miles and stopped at a grocery store and picked up food for lunch and dinner. We then finished the trip facing strong winds. We went to the grocery store food for dinner and then we set up camp in Cadzand for our last night sleeping in a tent before Brugge.

Cape Cod/ NES Trekkers Bike to Brewster, MA

Our day began  with an early wake up to pack up our stuff and head out on our 30 mile journey to Brewster, MA. After some grueling hills we stopped sandwiches and had a much needed break. After a horrifying yet hilarious google maps mistake we were sent on an hour long detour where we climbed some extremely steep hills. Due to stupid google maps we weren’t able to find the bike path to bring us to the campground, so when we finally did it felt amazing. For dinner we stopped at the king of all Stop and Shops and Wendy’s. We ended with a tent building competition and the best showers of our lives! Written by Lena

Across America Trekkers Experience “A Night Etched in ‘Their’ Minds Like The Light of the Sky”

Calories draped about us like Chewbacca’s bandolier and dusted with potato chip seasoning like ash from Mount Saint Helens, we pushed out from Super 8 and headed for the rising sun.

We ducked the midday heat in Waitsburg, inhaling sandwiches within the brick-clad splendor of a once bustling small town, then cruised through the playground water park before crushing the rest of our 65 miles to Pomeroy.

After purchasing groceries, we were given rides on a recumbent bicycle then approached by locals to join a neighborhood potluck and fireworks feast!

We sat on quilts as a garden of light blossomed above us, filling the air with delicate notes of phosphorus and good old American splendor. The British member of our group was gently tapped by a falling firework (no harm done!) and then we lit sparklers. It’s hard to ask for more after a day of cycling — a night etched in our minds like lights in the sky.

Amsterdam-Paris Trekkers Get a Surprise Break From the Wind and Rain With a Night in a Castle

After our tents began to leak in the rain last night, we moved inside to the uncomfortable floor of the laundry room at the campsite. We had a difficult morning as we were biking straight into the wind over a huge land bridge connecting two islands. Then we stopped in a small town called Brugh and had a huge lunch and got to rest for an hour while Jamie and Lis planned out the rest of our day. Our morale was low because we were expecting another long windy ride in the afternoon but we were pleasantly surprised when the bridge we went over barely had any wind. When we got to the end of the second bridge we stopped for a while for ice cream and got to relax. Then we set off. As we were riding to where we thought we would be camping, we passed a castle that had been turned into a hostel, and Jamie and Lis pulled over and surprised us with the news that we would be staying at the castle instead of camping. We were all so happy not to have to spend another night in a cold wet tent. After getting settled we went out to dinner at a delicious pancake restaurant near the castle and finished off our day well.

New Friends, Good Food and The Longest Hill in America, NYM Enjoy 4th of July Together

We woke up this morning to the sound of rain and each others groans. “Who knew rain had so much water?! “- Trekker Cooper. Immediately after we packed up our tents, the sky cleared and it was a beautiful day. On a detour due to bridge closure, we stumbled upon a July 4th parade which was very pleasant. We stopped at a deli to get some heavenly sandwiches and ended up meeting a few new friends! Including a kid named Chase who was very nice and bought us a bottle of cold water. A few others stopped and asked us about our journey and engaged in friendly conversations! After many minutes and many sandwiches, we went back on the road for more biking. We then tackled what felt like the longest hill in America, stopped at a gas station with a very nice Dunkin’ worker who gave us all free water. After going through a tunnel, one of our trekkers got a flat tire and we stopped to change it. Hoping all of our biggest challenges were behind us, we headed back out on the road for our last 10 miles of the day. We reached the much awaited hotel and jumped into the pool as fast as possible. We wrapped up our day with several pizzas, cookies, and Italian ices, and headed back to our rooms for the night.

A Visit to Pilgrim Monument and Beach Time for Cape Cod/NES Trekkers

Posted Leave a commentPosted in 2023

Our day started off with some bike issues but then started to look up with some delicious muffins. We headed downtown and enjoyed some racing up the Pilgrim Monument (except for the people who are afraid of heights haha.) We  then had lunch at the beach and played some Marco Polo in the water! Tessa found a moving rock which turned out to be a horseshoe crab!  We headed around Provincetown Historic District and got some ice cream which we all loved. We ended the day with a very competitive game of spoons and a delicious dinner!!
